Abstract
In the past seven years, we have prototyped three generations many-antenna base stations for massive MIMO, a key technology for 5G mobile data network. This experience revealed two critical computational barriers to innovations in wireless networking. First, today's basestation (or access point)-centric resource integration is bad for technology evolution and resource provisioning. Second, the prevalent use of Linux/C makes it difficult for software to eat the telecom infrastructure. This talk will focus on the second lesson and motivate the use of modern systems programming languages to realize a highly efficient, modular and eventually disappearing operating system.
