Abstract:
Robotics is a quickly growing field in research and industry with the potential to dramatically change how we live and work in the not so distant future. In this talk Prof. Schwertfeger from ShanghaiTech University is going to introduce his previous research from Jacobs University Bremen, where he obtained his PhD in 2012. Then his current research on extracting topological maps represented as topology graphs will be presented. We will see how such graphs can be extracted from 2D grid maps and what features we can extract. We can then also match two Topology maps from two grid maps to each other. Different applications of such topological representations will be presented, with an emphasis on map evaluation.
At the end Prof. Schwertfeger will shortly introduce ShanghaiTech University, the School of Information Science and Technology, the ShanghaiTech Automation and Robotics Center (STAR-Center) and his robotics lab.
Bio Sören Schwertfeger:
Sören Schwertfeger is an Assistant Professor at the School of Information Science and Technology of ShanghaiTech University, which he joined in Fall 2014. Before that he was a postdoctoral researcher at Jacobs University Bremen. After studying computer science at University of Bremen from Fall 1999 to Spring 2005 he joined the robotics group under Prof. Birk at Jacobs University Bremen. 2012 he received his Ph.D. in Computer Science. In 2010 he was engaging in a research exchange at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for 8 months and in 2015 he visited UC Berkeley as a guest researcher for two months.
His research interest is with intelligent robotics, with one application emphasis on search and rescue robotics, also in the aerial and underwater domain. One focus of his work is on intelligent functions and performance evaluation.
