Abstract:
Personalized therapies play an increasingly critical role in patient care of 21st century: Image guidance with multimodality image fusion facilitates the targeting of specific organ tissue and plays an important role in optimization of tailored interventional therapies. This talk will give an overview of my personal journey in the last decade as a researcher and technology leader in research and development of of world's first commercial image guided technology product for treating complex heart beats irregularities diseases such as Atrial Fibrillation, a disease affecting more than 33 million people worldwide. With use of multimodality image fusion of CT and MRI images to real-time intra-operative electrophysiological (EP) map, clinicians can perform minimally invasive image guided ablation safely and reliably. The resulting product has been successfully used world wide and treating hundreds of thousands of patients. The technologies developed for this application are being applied to other intervention applications such as cancer, cardiology, and neuro applications.Towards end of the talk, I will provide a personal reflection on why a close collaboration between advancement in research and advancement in development for commercial applications helps to accelerate the overall technological progress and provides a compelling and stimulating experience for all the participants in this highly international and collaborative pursuit that benefits the society at large.
