Abstract:

Networks are universal on the internet, cyberspace and even daily lives (social networks, financial networks, sensor networks, brain networks, etc). Elegant visualizations play a key role to advance our understanding of these networks. In this talk, I will introduce the four challenges in visually presenting big networks stemmed from their unique natures, namely, large, multivariate, dynamic, and sparse, coinciding with the four V's of big data. We classify state-of-the-art big network visualization techniques into four approaches: network layout, data transformation, graph mining and network interaction. Each approach is explained in at least one application domain and showcase with live/video demonstrations to illustrate its effectiveness.
