We have seen that digital evidence may often be available for a very short period of time and involve large volumes of data that are found locally on a single digital device or spread globally on the Internet. In many cybercrime cases, crime scenes are often found to co-exist in both cyberspace and physical worlds. In this talk, we will first focus on the challenges and research problems in digital forensics - a short briefing about the findings and suggestions from the ARO Workshop on Digital Forensics as well as the Digital Forensics Working Group initiated at the NSA/DHS CAE Principals Meetings. In the 2nd part of the talk, we will present our recent results in effective attack monitoring and attribution, which is essential for identifying the person or organized groups responsible for some criminal activities conducted in large-scale networked systems, such as the Internet. Through this talk, we hope to stimulate some interests and collaborations on solid research work in digital forensics.Brief Bio:Dr. Yong Guan is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Associate Director for Research, Information Assurance Center at Iowa State University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2002, MS and BS degrees in Computer Science from Peking University in 1996 and 1990, respectively. With the support of NSF, IARPA, ARO, and Boeing, his research focuses on security, privacy, and digital forensics. He served as the general chair of 2008 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, program vice‐chair for ICDCS (Security and Privacy Area), co‐organizer for ARO Workshop on Digital Forensics, and coordinator of Digital Forensics WG at NSA/DHS CAE Principals Meetings. Dr. Guan has been recognized by NSF Career Award, ISU Award for Early Achievement in Research, Litton Industries Professorship, and Outstanding Community Service Award of IEEE Technical Committee on Security and Privacy.
