Traditional IR approaches based on keywords are deficient to account for the structure of the query and the relationships between different expressions. We argue that a better query understanding can be achieved only when these two problems are taken into account. In this talk, we will describe some attempts made in our lab on these problems. Our experiments show that these approaches usually lead to improved retrieval effectiveness.Biography:Jian-Yun Nie is a professor in University of Montreal.
