Abstract:What is the starting point for a project manager to make her key decisions: activities to perform, techniques and tools to use, organisation of teams and responsibilities? Direct experience by the project manager, indirect experience from peers, but also popular trends and rumors remain the main starting point. Our profession still lacks a handbook, at least for two reasons: the fast pace of innovations, and the limited structured evidence available. This talk reviews the evidence, and the myths, that we have collected over 50 years of software development, and proposes a roadmap to develop an evidence based handbook for software engineering.BIO:Dr Maurizio Morisio is Full Professor at Dept. of Control and Computer Engineering of the Politecnico of Turin where he leads the software engineering group. In 1998-2000 he spent two years at the University of Maryland at College Park, working with the Experimental Software Engineering Group led by Vic Basili. From September 1998 to June 2000 he was on the board of directors of the SEL (Software Engineering Laboratory), a consortium among NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the University of Maryland and Computer Science Corporation, with the aim of improving software practices at NASA and CSC. He got a Ph.D. in Software Engineering and a M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering from Politecnico of Turin. He has published more than 70 papers in international journals and conferences and three books. He is associate editor in chief of IEEE Software and associate editor of Empirical Software Engineering Journal. He will be General chair of ESEIW 2014, to be held in Torino, Italy.
