Abstract:

RNA structural motifs are recurrent substructures which occur in an RNA subunit. They are building blocks of the RNA molecule and play an important role in binding proteins and consolidating the tertiary structure. In this talk, a new approach for recognizing different types of RNA motifs, known as Feature-based RNA Motif Filtering (FRMF), will be introduced. FRMF has been validated on a representative set of motifs, and has shown its effectiveness in the recognition of the motif structure and the discovery of new motifs.

The talk will conclude with an introduction of the RNA 3D motif database (R3DMotifdb) established by our group for studying RNA structural motifs. Currently, there are 235 RNA structural motifs associated with 50 RNA subunits in R3Dmotifdb. The structures of these motifs can be visualized and aligned in the system. R3Dmotifdb aims to provide a useful repository for researchers interested in RNA motif recognition, RNA tertiary structure prediction, RNA function prediction, and RNA-protein binding site prediction.
Biography of Wong Hau San

Wong Hau San received the B.Sc. and M.Phil. degrees in Electronic Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Information Engineering from the University of Sydney, Australia. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong. His current research interests include bioinformatics, machine learning and evolutionary computation, and his works in these areas have been published in journals such as Bioinformatics, IEEE Trans. on Evolutionary Computation, IEEE Trans. on Nanobioscience, Journal of Biomedical Informatics and Pattern Recognition. He is also the co-author of the book Adaptive Image Processing: A Computational Intelligence Perspective, which is a publication of Taylor & Francis/CRC Press.
