Tenure Track Positions Announcement,School of Computer Science,Fudan University

2012.03.30

'''Computer science at Fudan University, Shanghai, China, enjoys a 56-year history, starting with the construction of the first analog computer in China in 1956. To consolidate the various computer science groups at Fudan, the university established its School of Computer Science in 2008. The School boasts nearly 120 faculty and 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students. The School also hosts Fudan’s Software School and School of Security Administration. Situated in the Pudong High-Tech Park in Shanghai, the largest economically and culturally vibrant city in China, the School has five research institutes, a Shanghai Key Laboratory, and an Engineering Center designated by the Ministry of Education. In terms of research, the School has its distinctive strengths in the areas of computer networking, databases, information security, media computing, software engineering, system software, and theoretical computer science. The School has decided to focus on cloud computing and big data as growth directions to fully take advantage of the strengths of the School.

To foster speedy development, the School has established tenure-track positions and intends to use the positions to attract talents from both within China and from abroad. The School intends to strengthen the existing research areas to help the School in its growth directions.

The tenure-track positions are different from the traditional positions in the School, in particular they adopt a new salary system with a negotiated annual salary that is competitive in the market. The recruitment process will be similar to that of tenure-track positions in a typical research university in the US, consisting of application, external evaluation, on-site interview, and job offer and negotiation stages. Each appointment contract of the tenure-track position will initially be for six years, with the first tenure evaluation done in the fourth year of appointment. A positive evaluation result of this fourth-year evaluation is both a necessary and sufficient condition for continued employment on the tenure track subsequent to the first contract. In subsequent years, post-tenure evaluation will be performed at regular intervals.

Recruitment ranks: All ranks (lecturer, associate professor, and professor).
Number of positions available: 5 for the year 2012, regardless of rank.
Responsibilities: Teaching, research, and service.
Position entry requirements: Doctoral degree in computer science or a related field. Candidates for associate professor (or professor, resp.) should have at least three (five resp.) years of experience in independent research after the doctoral degree. Special rank requests are considered on a case-by-case basis.
